An authentic Vespolina from the heart of Ghemme

La Mostella is made from 100% Vespolina, a rare indigenous grape variety from Alto Piemonte. Once widely planted throughout the hills of Northern Piedmont, Vespolina has become increasingly uncommon due to the challenges of cultivating it. With its extensive Vespolina vineyards, Torraccia del Piantavigna is today one of the leading producers of this remarkable grape.

The wine comes from the hillside vineyards of Ghemme, where acidic, clay-rich alluvial soils contribute freshness, tension and a distinctive aromatic profile. Because Vespolina naturally possesses such a strong personality, La Mostella is produced without any oak ageing, allowing the pure character of the grape to shine.

La Mostella Vespolina DOC 2024 | Torraccia del Piantavigna

Fresh, peppery and full of personality: a wine that won't appeal to everyone, but those who love it, truly love it.

Grape Variety: 100% Vespolina
Type: Red Wine
Classification: Vespolina DOC

Origin & Vineyard

The grapes come from approximately 5 hectares of estate-owned vineyards in the Poncioni area, within the Ghemme DOC zone. The soil consists of acidic fluvio-alluvial clay. The vineyards are managed according to environmentally friendly principles, with Guyot-trained vines and meticulous manual vineyard work throughout the growing season.

Vinification & Ageing

The grapes are harvested by hand at the end of September and transported in small crates. After gentle pressing, the wine undergoes maceration and alcoholic fermentation at low temperatures to preserve the fruit-driven and spicy character of the Vespolina grape.

The wine is then aged for 12 months in stainless steel tanks, without any oak influence, followed by 4 months of bottle ageing.

Tasting Notes

Colour: Bright ruby red with vibrant reflections.

Nose: Expressive and distinctive, with aromas of red fruits, subtle balsamic notes and characteristic spicy nuances.

Palate: Fresh and balanced, with firm tannins, a pronounced peppery character and a pleasantly bitter finish. A wine with strong personality and a truly individual style.

Thanks to its firm tannic structure and vibrant freshness, La Mostella pairs beautifully with richer dishes. It is particularly well suited to charcuterie, salami, cured meats, terrines and cold meat dishes.

Serving Temperature: 15–16 °C

What Makes This Wine Special

Vespolina is one of Alto Piemonte's most distinctive indigenous grape varieties. While many wines strive for broad appeal, Vespolina stands out for its unique personality. La Mostella is fresh, fruity, spicy and unmistakably peppery. Not a wine for everyone, but a wine for those who enjoy discovering something genuinely different.
